KompoZer Free Downloads…

…for the month of October hit a new high. Folks looking for a free, WYSIWYG HTML editor picked up 104,777 copies. The latest release, 0.7.10, has proven to be popular with novice web authors as well as more experienced web designers.

KompoZer is a follow-on to Nvu. Nvu was released a couple of years ago but that work was clearly not a finished product. Nvu development stopped with the release of 1.0 and there are no plans to continue with Nvu. There is a development plan that takes advantage of more current technology for the next open source HTML editor. My personal view is that product is like the space shuttle replacement vehicle: We may see both in 2015 and neither will fly.

My view has always been that KompoZer is more than a bug fix for Nvu. Sure the bugs have been eliminated but there are other user interface improvements and functions that are really appealing. The CSS editor, for example, is greatly improved over the original Cascades or even the version originally included in KompoZer. The user can see changes taking place as rules are entered into the editor. That makes it possible for novices who do not understand coding (or who do not want to) to use CSS.

There are a host of resources available to support KompoZer. This blog has permanent links (look to the right column), links in each post, and the major links in this post.

KompoZer Web Site

Free downloads of KompoZer can be launched from the project web site. KompoZer relies on the development resources offered at SourceForge but KompoZer.net now shows screen shots and features of the package. Download links are provided for Windows, Mac, Linux, Debian and RedHat versions. There are links to 13 language packs on the KompoZer site as well.

You can see why KompoZer is my web-authoring tool of choice. It is free, open source, cross-platform and localized. It is also documented.

KompoZer Manual

The KompoZer User Guide, written by Charles Cooke, is really a clear, concise presentation of how to use KompoZer as a tool for creating web pages. Mr. Cooke started with the Nvu version then added KompoZer differences. The current edition is based on KompoZer 0.7.10 that Charles says “is significantly improved from earlier versions of both Kompozer and Nvu.

KompoZer Tutorials

If you are a novice web author considering KompoZer take a look at this tutorial for a quick overview. That page gives you a good idea of the power offered by KompoZer based on release 0.7.7.

A more detailed tutorial is also available for using this WYSIWYG HTML editor to create web pages. I haven’t tested this version of what appears to be basically an update to the Nvu tutorial. The clear omission is using the CSS editor in KompoZer for page layout. For using CSS that take a look at Mr. Cooke’s other guide, Introduction to CSS Cascading Style Sheets. The guide is generalized so it applies to any use of cascading style sheets but he does offer drop downs that give how to perform the steps using KompoZer.

A lot of visitors to this blog get here by searching for answers to specific questions about KompoZer, WYSIWYG HTML editors, and of course free software to create web sites. You can also search this blog for topics that may interest you. Each article should have links to other sites that will also be helpful in creating and enhancing the search engine ranking of your web site. That is what we try to do.

What you see is free if you see it here. You can get KompoZer for free, you can get free software to host your site, prepare images and keep track of your visitors. It is a wonderful process so get busy and get your ideas and creativity on the web.
